What are the Rules of Cricket and How to Play It?
October 30, 2025

Let us be honest, whenever we have seen Chris Gayle on-screen shooting his sixes, we have wanted to grab hold of the bat. Or when we saw Shaheen Shah Afridi take wicket after wicket, we thought we could aim at the stumps too. Cricket is not just a sport, it is an emotion.

In the stadium, you will see the biggest roars on a catch out but the same roaring crowds let out an ‘Óooh’ when it is their star captain being bold out. Cricket has been around for a very long time and is the gift of England.

There were times when cricket was considered to be the sport of elites but now you do not need to be an aristocrat to play cricket. You just need one thing, and that is the will to learn and play. And obviously, you ould need a bat and a ball too.

In today’s article, we will be going over the rules of cricket and elaborating on how to play cricket!

How To Play Cricket?

The basic aim of playing the game is that you need to ensure that your team makes more runs than the team against you. The rules of cricket play a crucial role in dictating what is fair and what is to be allowed. There are three categories of crickets. These include T20, One Day, and Test Cricket. All these variants have different time durations to be played within.

So how to play cricket? The fundamental idea is that you hit the ball with your bat to get runs. Wheelie one team bowls and fields to stop boundaries, other team bats. The team that is batting only has two players on the pitch.

The team that bowls tries their best to out all the players of the batting team as soon as possible so that they make the least runs. On the contrary, the team that bats need to make sure that they can make the most runs to set a higher target for their opponents to match.

Once the batting team has lost all wickets, the roles are reversed. Those who were batting would now ball and vice versa.

The Structure Of Cricket

The two teams that play are required to select 11 players in total to represent them. All 11 players should be able to play all roles when necessary. However, they all have their specialties. While one would be a fast bowler who is a master of dot balls( balls on which no runs are made), another might be a net-like wicketkeeper, no ball can miss its catch.

The ground has a pitch in the middle which is always estimated to be equidistant from the field’s circumference. There is a crease that is marked on either end of the pitch. This crease denoted two things. Firstly, the bowler should deliver from behind this. If that is not the case, it is considered to be a ball. Secondly, that if the batsman is out of the crease and the ball hits the stumps, the wicket is gone.

There is another circle that is added to the ground towards the middle. It is used to control the number of players near the pitch during power play. This is usually a 30-yard circle marked with white chalk.

How The Scoreboard Works?

The rules of cricket are self explanaorty and explain how the game is played. A single run is achieved when the batsmen on strike can hit the ball far enough for the batsmen to cross the ditch once and make it safely behind their creases. Both of them can continue running to and fro until they feel like they might not make it to the other end before the ball.

If the ball has crossed the boundary without bouncing once off the field, six runs are considered to be made. On the other hand, if it does bounce once or twice or even is in constant contact with the field before crossing the boundary or even touching it, it is a four. If a fielder touches the ball and is in contact with the boundary, it is still considered to be a four.

If a bowler delivers a wide ball, a ball that is at a greater than acceptable distance from the wickets, it is counted as one run.

Here are some important key points to help you understand the rules of cricket and how to play it:

  1. One over consists of 6 balls
  2. Test cricket is played over five days. Each time is given two innings to score.
  3. A batsman is considered to be out if he is bold( hitting the stumps directly) LBw which is leg before wicket, stumped, or even if the batsman tries to manhandle the ball by directing it elsewhere with their body.
  4. The team that is fielding should have one player who wears the full safety kit and stands behind the wickets. The safety kit includes a helmet, leg guards, chest guards, and gloves.
  5. Each game of cricket is judged by two empires. However, if the game is at a higher scale that is international, there are usually more.

Conclusion:

If you have all these rules of cricket under your belt and a bit of talent, you are very likely to win a match. A victory can only be enjoyed when the game is played by abiding by the rules. Cricket is a sport that demands its players complete dedication and focus.

Therefore, you should not shy away from the hard work and effort that the game calls for. With all this being said, make sure that you taste the relish of being in competition rather than playing the game without any heart.
